South Texas College of Law helping to develop alternative dispute resolution in the Republic of Georgia

Burnett_catherine_g_128x170South Texas College of Law will be sending professors to the Republic of Georgia during the next three months. It's?part of the school?s commitment to the new National Center for Alternative Dispute Resolution at the Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University Faculty of Law, says Catherine G. Burnett (pictured), vice president and associate dean at the Houston law school. The South Texas law faculty will be in Tbilisi developing courses they will teach with Georgian professors, she says. Georgians want to become a major economic player in their region and are looking more and more to American law as they develop their legal system, Burnett says. ?That?s going to require them to have a different approach to arbitration and mediation, and it?s going to be necessary for them to have a supporting legal culture for that,? she says. ?A lot is driven by their interest in commercial development in the region.? The Republic of Georgia?s boundaries include the Black Sea, Russia and Turkey. South Texas Law won a $750,000 grant in May 2011 from the U.S. Agency for International Development?s Judicial Independence and Legal Empowerment Project to establish the ADR center at the university in Tbilisi, the capital of the country, says Donald J. Guter, president and dean of the South Texas law school. Guter and Burnett were in Tbilisi earlier this month for the official opening of the new law center. Guter says that, while in Tbilisi, he learned a lot from Georgians about their geopolitical history and their excitement about the opportunity to reform the country?s legal education system. ?The impact that we?re having on the people and their system, I just don?t think you can put a price on that,? Guter says. ?There is so much optimism in what they are building. That was something that made a very heavy impression on me: their courage moving forward.?
