Great Tools for Your Organic Garden

To get started with organic gardening, there are a few basic tools and supplies that you need. However, because organic gardening is no different to the non-organic variety apart from the fact that there are no chemicals involved, the tools and supplies that you need to get started can be kept fairly basic. You can then buy additional tools and supplies as you go along as and when needed.

The first thing that you need is a basic garden spade which you can buy at the local garden centre or online, with many sites in the UK, USA and Canada where tools can be purchased on the net:

Firstly, you can buy a variety of spades for use with different types of soils from heavy clay types or a lighter sand-based soil. But of course, there is no need to buy a specific type of spade, because an ordinary spade will be more than adequate.

The main thing is, try to make sure all of the tools you buy are at least half-decent quality because they are far less likely to break.

This means that you have less need to replace them on a regular basis as well.

Then you need a garden fork which you can use to turnover the compost heap and for a multitude of other tasks as well:

Next on the list is a rake for tidying your plant beds before planting, for collecting together grass cuttings for your compost heap and so on:

You also may need a hoe, but because there are so many different types of hoes, you need to make certain that you get the right type, with the ideal being something akin to a trowel on the end of a long pole.

This is generally known as a digging hoe, because that it?s exactly what you want it for, digging around your plants without damaging them.

You are going to need to do this from time to time to remove weeds from your plant beds, a job for which your spade is likely to be too big to be of any use.

The final tool that you need to get started with is a set of secateurs, and if you can afford to buy a top quality pair, it will serve you to do so as they will last you for many years as long as you look after them:

You need some gardening gloves, something waterproof to wear on your feet whilst trudging around the garden and a mat of some description to kneel on for when you need to kneel down.

Beyond the tools highlighted above and these few final supplies, there really isn?t anything else that you need to buy to start your organic gardening adventure. As you progress, you will undoubtedly find that you need specific tools for specific jobs, and that is the time to buy them.

Until then, you can usually do most jobs in your organic garden with a little ingenuity and improvisational skills, so don?t waste money at the beginning on tools that you might never use.
